A free api.data.gov key is required. Signed keys are 1,000 req/hour; DEMO_KEY is 30/hour and 50/day per IP. Without a key the API returns JSON 403 API_KEY_MISSING.

Notes

Research listed catalog.data.gov/api/3 (CKAN). That path 404s. Data.gov replaced CKAN with Catalog API v4 at api.gsa.gov. The key is injected as X-Api-Key at fetch time and is never embedded in artifact_url. Live search results change, so the checker omits content_hash.
