Exploring the impact of the first rule of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy on fear of intimacy, vulnerability, and responsiveness: An analog process analysis
Overview
This paper examines whether relying solely on the first rule of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy—monitoring for daily life problems in session—is sufficient for effective treatment. Using an analog study with 81 undergraduate participants, the authors tested if providing therapists with self-report data on these problems improved outcomes related to fear of intimacy and responsiveness. The results indicated that while fear of intimacy decreased overall, access to this information did not enhance the therapist's effectiveness and was perceived by participants as less responsive. The resource discusses the limitations of isolating the first rule and the utility of analog paradigms in FAP research.
