Metacognition and recovery in schizophrenia: From research to the development of metacognitive reflection and insight therapy
Overview
This paper outlines the development of Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT), an integrative psychotherapy designed to address metacognitive deficits in schizophrenia. It defines metacognition as a spectrum of activities that enable individuals to synthesize experiences into a sense of self and others, serving as a basis for agentic responses to psychosocial challenges. The authors discuss methods for assessing metacognition, the eight core elements of MERIT, and its comparison with other treatments. The resource also reviews empirical support for MERIT's role in facilitating recovery by helping individuals develop personally meaningful understandings of their challenges.
