Psychotherapy versus the combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy in the treatment of depression: a meta-analysis
Overview
This meta-analysis compares the efficacy of psychotherapy alone versus the combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for treating depression, analyzing data from 18 randomized studies involving 1,838 participants. The authors report that combined treatment showed a statistically significant advantage over psychotherapy alone in the short term, with variations observed based on therapy type, patient population, and medication class. However, no significant difference was found between the two approaches at follow-up, and the clinical relevance of the initial difference remains unclear.
