What’s a “Cognitive” Intervention? The PICC-M Framework to Distinguish Cognitive Remediation, Stimulation, Training, Therapy, and Rehabilitation
Overview
This paper introduces the PICC-M framework to clarify distinctions among various cognitive interventions such as remediation, stimulation, training, therapy, and rehabilitation. The authors propose classifying these interventions based on five active ingredients: psychotherapeutic support, individualized patient goals, cognitive exercises, compensatory strategies, and metacognitive strategies. The resource is intended for clinicians and researchers to help standardize terminology and guide the design of dismantling studies for older adults with neurocognitive deficits.
