Cognitive change predicts symptom reduction with cognitive therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder.
Overview
This paper investigates whether cognitive changes precede symptom reduction in Cognitive Therapy for PTSD, a form of trauma-focused CBT. Using data from 268 patients, the authors found that decreases in dysfunctional trauma-related appraisals significantly predicted subsequent reductions in PTSD symptoms. The study supports the theoretical model that modifying negative appraisals is an active mechanism of therapeutic change.
