“Noticing the Way that I’m Noticing Pain”: A Qualitative Analysis of Therapeutic Progression in Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement for Patients with Lumbosacral Radicular Pain
Overview
This qualitative study analyzes session recordings from a clinical trial of Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE) for patients with lumbosacral radicular pain. The authors identify a four-stage progression—Vigilance-Avoidance Metacognition-Reappraisal—through which participants modify their relationship to pain, noting that attention skills may initially be used for avoidance. The resource is intended for clinicians to anticipate challenges and tailor mindfulness-based interventions.
