An Investigation of the Role of Attention in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Recurrently Depressed Patients
Overview
This study examines the role of attention in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for recurrent depression using the Attention Network Test on 34 MBCT patients and 37 controls. While the MBCT group showed decreased depressive symptoms and ruminative thinking alongside increased mindfulness skills, no significant changes were observed in specific or general attentional processes compared to the control group. The authors suggest these findings indicate that an attitude of openness and acceptance, rather than attentional shifts, may mediate the efficacy of short-term mindfulness interventions.
