Distress Tolerance Treatment for Early-Lapse Smokers
Overview
This paper outlines a theoretical rationale for a novel distress-tolerance treatment designed for smokers who experience early lapses during cessation attempts. The authors propose that the inability to tolerate withdrawal symptoms, rather than the severity of those symptoms, is a key target for intervention. The described multicomponent approach integrates standard behavioral and pharmacological elements with exposure-based and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy techniques. Preliminary data from a pilot study involving 16 participants are included alongside clinical implications.
