Acceptance as a Mediator for Change in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Persons with Chronic Pain?
Overview
This paper investigates whether acceptance mediates treatment outcomes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for individuals with chronic pain, using data from a previously published randomized controlled trial. The authors analyzed changes in physical functioning and life satisfaction at 6- and 12-month follow-ups to determine if acceptance served as a mechanism of change compared to anxiety and depression. Results indicated that acceptance mediated improvements in physical functioning at the 6-month mark, though findings were limited by small sample sizes.
