Six-month outcomes of layperson-delivered, telephone-based behavioural activation and mindfulness interventions on loneliness among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: The HEAL-HOA Dual Randomised Controlled Trial
Overview
This randomized controlled trial evaluates six-month outcomes of telephone-based behavioral activation and mindfulness interventions delivered by laypersons to reduce loneliness in socioeconomically deprived, digitally excluded older adults during the pandemic. The study compares these active interventions against a telephone befriending control group across multiple psychosocial metrics, including social support, stress, and depressive symptoms. Results indicate that behavioral activation significantly reduced loneliness and improved secondary outcomes compared to the control, while mindfulness showed mixed results on specific loneliness scales.
