Failure to Regulate: Counterproductive Recruitment of Top-Down Prefrontal-Subcortical Circuitry in Major Depression
Overview
This fMRI study compares neural activity in nondepressed individuals and those with major depressive disorder during emotion regulation tasks. It reports that depressed participants exhibit bilateral prefrontal cortex activation and a positive association between the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and amygdala, contrasting with the left-lateralized activation and inverse connectivity seen in healthy controls. The resource suggests that counterproductive recruitment of specific prefrontal-subcortical circuits may underlie the pathophysiology of depression.
