Psychological Capital and Mental Health in Ecuadorian University Students: The Mediating Role of Negative Stress
Overview
This cross-sectional study investigates how negative stress mediates the relationship between Psychological Capital (PsyCap) and indicators of psychological distress among 1,732 university students in Ecuador. The research defines PsyCap as a composite of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism, analyzing its impact on anxiety-depression symptoms and psychological inflexibility using structural equation modeling. The findings indicate that higher levels of PsyCap are associated with reduced negative stress, which in turn lowers distress indicators, suggesting a partial mediation model. This resource is relevant for researchers and clinicians interested in strengths-based approaches and stress-reduction strategies within Latin American university populations.
