A multivariate meta-analysis of motivational interviewing process and outcome.
Overview
This multivariate meta-analysis examines the relationships between motivational interviewing therapist behaviors, client language, and clinical outcomes using data from 19 studies. The authors report that while MI-consistent behaviors predict increased client change and sustain talk, and higher empathy ratings correlate with more consistent behaviors, these factors do not significantly predict clinical outcomes. Client sustain talk is identified as a predictor of worse outcomes, whereas change talk shows no significant relationship with results. The resource discusses the equivocal nature of these process-outcome links for researchers and clinicians interested in MI mechanisms.
