Effects of change in dysfunctional beliefs and self-esteem in avatar-based cognitive therapy for symptoms of social anxiety disorder: a randomized parallel trial
Overview
This randomized controlled trial investigates the impact of a remote avatar-based cognitive restructuring intervention on social anxiety symptoms in individuals with subclinical social anxiety disorder. The study compares participants who contradict dysfunctional beliefs voiced by an avatar against a control group that contradicts nonsense statements, assessing outcomes at post-intervention and 14-day follow-up. Results indicate that the intervention group experienced greater symptom reduction than the control group, with changes in self-esteem and social phobia cognitions correlating with symptom severity.
