Immunological effects of behavioral activation with exercise in major depression: an exploratory randomized controlled trial
Overview
This exploratory randomized controlled trial investigates whether adding exercise to cognitive-behavioral therapy influences inflammatory markers in patients with major depression. The study compares a behavioral activation group emphasizing exercise against standard CBT and a waiting list control, measuring plasma cytokines and immune cell counts at baseline, eight weeks, and sixteen weeks. Results indicate that the exercise-focused intervention was associated with increased levels of the anti-inflammatory marker IL-10 compared to controls, particularly in patients with elevated baseline cardiovascular risk.
