Pain-mediated affect regulation is reduced after dialectical behavior therapy in borderline personality disorder: a longitudinal fMRI study
Overview
This longitudinal fMRI study examines whether residential Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) alters neural mechanisms of pain-mediated affect regulation in individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. The research compares 28 DBT patients, 15 patients receiving treatment as usual, and 23 healthy controls at two time points to assess changes in amygdala activity and connectivity during emotional and painful stimuli. The authors report that DBT reduced the neural patterns associated with using pain for emotion regulation compared to the control group, while pain thresholds remained unchanged.
