Using Biosensor Devices and Ecological Momentary Assessment to Measure Emotion Regulation Processes: Pilot Observational Study With Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Overview
This pilot observational study evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of integrating ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and wearable biosensors into dialectical behavior therapy for 20 adults with borderline personality disorder. The research assesses whether these technologies can reliably measure emotion regulation processes by correlating electrodermal activity with self-reported negative affect and suicidal thinking. Results indicate moderate adherence to EMA protocols but no significant association between physiological arousal and emotional states, while noting a predictive link between changes in negative affect and subsequent suicidal ideation.
