Cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with chronic pain
Overview
This paper investigates the impact of cognitive-behavioral therapy on empathy levels in 89 patients with severe chronic pain, analyzing potential gender differences. The study measures changes in interpersonal reactivity and pain severity before and after an eight-session CBT intervention. It reports that female participants maintained higher empathy levels than males throughout the treatment and identifies a relationship between affective pain and empathy for others' distress. The authors suggest that baseline empathy may influence therapeutic alliance and clinical outcomes, particularly for women.
