Neural Function Before and After Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in Anxious Adolescents at Risk for Developing Bipolar Disorder
Overview
This study examines neurophysiological changes in nine adolescents with anxiety disorders and a family history of bipolar disorder before and after completing 12 weeks of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Children (MBCT-C). Using fMRI during an emotional processing task, the authors report increased activation in brain regions associated with interoception, such as the insula and anterior cingulate. The resource notes that reductions in anxiety symptoms correlated with these specific neural changes.
