Observed communication in couples two years after integrative and traditional behavioral couple therapy: Outcome and link with five-year follow-up.
Overview
This paper reports on a randomized clinical trial comparing traditional behavioral couple therapy (TBCT) and integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT) in distressed couples, focusing on observed communication changes two years post-therapy. The study analyzed videotaped interactions to assess negativity, withdrawal, problem-solving, and positivity, finding that IBCT led to superior maintenance of communication improvements compared to TBCT. It further examines the association between these communication patterns and relationship satisfaction at two years, as well as clinically significant treatment response and marital status at five years.
