Motivational Interviewing and Decisional Balance: Contrasting Responses to Client Ambivalence
Overview
This paper contrasts two methods for addressing client ambivalence: decisional balance (DB) and the evocation of change talk. It reviews empirical evidence to suggest that DB tends to decrease commitment to change, while evocation promotes it. The resource indicates that DB is suitable for maintaining neutrality, whereas evocation is appropriate when the goal is to facilitate change.
