A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Mindfulness Meditation, Cognitive Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Low Back Pain
Overview
This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and effects of group-delivered mindfulness meditation, cognitive therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for chronic low back pain among 69 adults. The study found that all treatments were acceptable and well-tolerated, with significant improvements in pain interference, intensity, physical function, and depression observed post-treatment across all groups. Follow-up data suggested that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy may offer sustained benefits over mindfulness meditation on specific outcomes, though further definitive trials are needed to confirm these differences.
