Combining Acceptance and Commitment Therapy With Adventure Therapy to Promote Psychological Wellbeing for Children At-Risk
Overview
This paper describes a small-scale evaluation of an eight-week 'ACT in the Outdoors' intervention combining acceptance and commitment therapy with adventure therapy for nine upper primary school-aged children with challenging behaviors or emotional needs. The study utilized pre- and post-intervention psychological measures and interviews to assess changes in psychological wellbeing and skill development. Results indicated that some participants reported improvements, which appeared influenced by attendance rates and initial wellbeing levels. The authors conclude that further research is needed to explore the potential benefits of this interdisciplinary approach.
