Individual participant data meta-analysis of eating behaviour traits as effect modifiers in acceptance and commitment therapy-based weight management interventions
Overview
This paper presents an individual participant data meta-analysis investigating whether baseline eating behavior traits moderate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for weight management in adults with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. The study re-analyzed harmonized data from 15 trials involving 2,535 participants to assess interaction effects between ACT interventions and traits such as emotional eating and internal disinhibition. Results indicated no significant continuous interactions but suggested that participants with medium levels of internal disinhibition or emotional eating may experience greater weight loss benefits compared to those with high levels. The authors note the exploratory nature of these findings and call for replication in confirmatory trials.
