Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: Effect on Emotional Distress in Older Adults
Overview
This retrospective analysis evaluates the impact of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on mood states in 141 older adults over age 60. Participants completed the Profile of Mood States-Short Form before and after an eight-week training period, with results indicating significant improvements in emotional distress and a reduction in clinically significant depression and anxiety. The authors describe MBSR as a promising group-based intervention for this demographic while noting the need for larger randomized controlled trials to confirm these findings.
