Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Lowers Psychological Distress In Medical Students
Overview
This study examines the effectiveness of a 10-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) seminar for second-year medical students facing academic and psychosocial stressors. Using a prospective, nonrandomized cohort-controlled design, researchers compared participants in the MBSR group against controls attending a didactic seminar on complementary medicine. The results indicate that while the MBSR group started with higher baseline mood disturbance, they demonstrated significantly lower total mood disturbance and improved scores on specific subscales like tension-anxiety and fatigue after the intervention.
